Founder of the Republic of Turkey, reformer, commander, and statesman. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (1881–1938) transformed a collapsing empire into a modern, secular, democratic republic — and left a legacy that resonates far beyond Turkey's borders.
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was born in 1881 in Thessaloniki (then part of the Ottoman Empire, now Greece). His father, Ali Riza Efendi, was a customs officer. After his father died young, his mother Zubeyde Hanim raised him with strong values and a commitment to education.
He attended military school, where his mathematics teacher gave him the name "Kemal" (meaning maturity and perfection) in recognition of his brilliance. He graduated from the Ottoman War College in 1905 and the War Academy in 1907 as a staff officer.
His military genius was first demonstrated at the Battle of Gallipoli (1915), where his leadership stopped the Allied advance. He later commanded the entire War of Independence (1919–1922), liberating Anatolia from occupation.
On October 29, 1923, he proclaimed the Republic of Turkey and became its first President. He governed until his death on November 10, 1938, implementing sweeping reforms that modernized every aspect of Turkish society.
The most significant moments in the life of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk — from Thessaloniki to Ankara.
The six foundational principles of Kemalism, formally adopted into the Turkish Constitution in 1937 and still in force today.
Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the people. The state is governed through elected representatives. Abolished the Ottoman Sultanate and Caliphate.
A civic nationalism based on shared citizenship and culture — not ethnicity. United diverse peoples of Anatolia as a single Turkish nation.
All citizens are equal before the law. No class, group, or family holds privilege. The state serves the welfare of the entire people without distinction.
The state plays an active role in the economy to drive development — particularly in industries where private capital is insufficient. Guided economic modernization.
Separation of religious authority from state affairs. Religion is a personal matter; the state is governed by reason and science. Guarantees freedom of religion.
Continuous progress and modernization. Reforms are not frozen in time — society must always advance toward contemporary civilization standards.
Words that shaped a nation — and continue to inspire the world.
"Peace at home, peace in the world."
"The most truthful guide in life is science."
"Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation."
"How happy is the one who says I am a Turk!"
"The power you need is already present in the noble blood flowing through your veins."
"A nation that does not read, does not think. A nation that does not think is trampled underfoot."
